It is often said that charity is at the heart of what we do as Freemasons, and as such, nothing is more pleasurable than when the money we have raised is handed over to a good cause.
So it was last night, as our current IPM W.Bro Blanchard (centre, right) accompanied by Lodge Treasurer W.Bro Toogood, handed over a cheque for £500, raised through various raffles held during his most recent tenure as WM, to Bath Mencap, his chosen charity.
Bath Mencap is the local arm of the national charity of the same name, devoted to helping those with learning disabilities in the BANES area live a fulfilled life through social activities, trips out, and other pursuits. Among the many activities the charity has devised to combat the social isolation that can affect people with learning disabilities is Uproar!, Bath’s first club night for adults with learning disabilities, which provides a safe, relaxed and fun environment for them, as well as their family and friends, to cut loose and dance like nobody’s watching!
Of his reasons for choosing this wonderful charity, W.Bro Blanchard said: “I have a mentally-handicapped daughter who derives much pleasure from attending the Bath Mencap club. The volunteers who run it put enormous energy into providing activities for the club members and I was grateful that the Lodge felt able to assist in providing funds to enable the club’s work to continue.”
